 TECTONICS

 TELEPATHY

TECTONICS

Branch of geology that studies the dynamic causes of the various features of the Earth's crust in so far as these involve the bodily movement of rock formations; it thus excludes the forces involved in denudation, gradation, and sedimentation. It includes the studies of epeirogenesis and orogenesis, the folding and faulting of strata, the mechanics of earthquakes, the disturbances caused by magmatic intrusions, and the mechanism of continental drift. Its chief work consists of the interpretation of complex local distortions of strata, and accounting for them as the consequences of general crustal movements.

TELEPATHY

A posited paranormal phenomenon in which thoughts are communicated directly from one mind to another without physical mediation. Telepathy is distinguished from clairvoyance, which consists of receiving visual images of persons or events without the use of the eyes. Both come under the category of 'extra-sensory perception' (ESP) and are reputed to occur in a comparatively few persons of special susceptibilities, especially in communities in which racial inbreeding has been common for a long time. They are possibly more frequently experienced than is realized, and may even play some recondite part in normal sensory communication, the understanding of which presents considerable difficulties. On the other hand there is a large body of opinion that denies that extra-sensory perception ever occurs, or at least that any case of it has yet been satisfactorily demonstrated. Ever since. the late 19th century scientific tests of variable validity have been undertaken from time to time, notably those organized from the 1930s onwards by J. B. Rhine of Duke university in North Carolina and by S. G. Soal of London university. The evidence thus obtained is of a statistical character and is very impressive, but it is still an open question whether it is more credible than the objections raised against it. Since the Second World War the U.S.S.R. has engaged in extensive investigation, but though the Russian investigators have uncovered further evidence they have been unable to find a materialistic explanation of it. Their hopeful theories of 'thought rays' or 'waves' are ruled-out by the complete independence of space and time that telepathic phenomena seem to exhibit.
