frostbite The condition which results when, after prolonged exposure to extreme cold, the flow of blood to the extremities is cut off and the tissues become frozen. In mild cases, circulation can be restored by the gradual application of warmth, starting with snow or cold water and by rubbing or slapping the affected area. In more severe cases, injections of novaine acetychlorodine can be used to stimulate the flow of blood. But when frostbite is well advanced, it is impossible to restore the circulation, and the affected areas (usually fingers and toes) must be ampuated, lest gangrene set in. American pioneer of submarine and steam boat design. In 1800, Fulton built a submarine called Nautilus, which was driven by sail on the surface and by hand-operated propeller underwater. While living in France, he carried out successful trials with the Nautilus, and with another submarine called the Mute, but failed to interest the French government in adopting his inventions. In 1806, Fulton returned to the United States, where he built the Clermont, which became the first commercial successful steamboat. Flying fish is a small fish, about 18 inches (48 cm.) long, which can glide through the air on fins which look like wings. Unlike birds, flying fish cannot move their 'wings' up and down to stay in the air. They swim at high speed, with their 'wings' folded, to the surface of the water and then open their 'wings' and glide through the air. They travel through the air at about 10 miles per hour (16 k.p.h.) and can go as far as 500 feet (152 m.) without touching the water again. |
