Nowhere in the world is there another mountain system to compare with the Himalaya. Real exploration of the Himalaya started only in the mid-1700's, when the British East India Company began extending its control over india and sending out expeditions to explore and map its frontiers. By the close of the century, a few of these expeditions had penetrated the Himalaya as far as Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet. On the basis of their reports, the Surveyor General of Bengal, Captain James Rennel, was able to publish the first map of Hindoostan in the 1780's.
