Left:- 

The stupa developed from a burial mound into a dome built over a shrine containing a sacred relic. This stupa at Sanchi was probably begun by Asoka in the 3rd century B.C. and later encased in stone. The gateway dates from the 1st century B.C.

Right:-
The temple of Lingara at Bhubaneswar, capital of Orissa state, built in the mid-10th-century A.D., is a fine example of the Nagara style of architecture.




Calcutta


The Victoria Memorial in Calcutta, regarded as Calcutta's most beautiful European building, stands to the south-east of the famous Maidan (or park), and houses a museum.

The fortress in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh,
whose towers and battlements were constructed in the 15th century, ovrlooking a preciptous rock of sandstone. The guns are a reminder of the rebellion of local troopes in the indian Mutiny; the fortress was saved, however, by the loyalty of the maharaja.

The fortress of Agra was built in red sandstone by the Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573. Inside this mighty group of buildings are the emperor's residence, the Peal Mosque, and the mahal Jahangir.

A couple of lovers among the 11th-century sandstone sculptures on the temple of Khajraho in Madhya Pradesh. Erotics was early estblished as a branch of ethics, of which the scholarly and comprehensive 5th-century KamaSutra is a an outstanding example.
