Facts about
ADRENALIN

adrenalin
ADRENALIN

An important vaso-constrictive hormone secreted by the suprarenal glands. This hormone regulates the degree of contraction of the arteries and therefore influences blood pressure, stimulates the action of the heart, tends to dilate the bronchi, and helps in the transmission of nervous stimuli from the nerves to the muscles, When animals are confronted with a situation of danger the supply of adrenalin to the bloodstream is greatly increases as the body instinctively prepares for "fight or flight".

Adrenalin was the first hormone to be isolated in 1901, by the Japanese chemist Takamine in the United States. It is used in medicine in cases of cardio-circulatory collapse and brochial asthma, and is injected directly into the heart in cases when the heart has actually stopped.
