ADENOIDS

ADENOIDS
ADENOIDS

A mass of spongy lymphatic tissue situated between the nose and pharynx. Acute inflammation of the adenoids causes a temperature, difficulty in breathing through the nose, inflammation of the middle ear, and a generally listless condition. The term "adenoidal" refers to the general group of disorders from which individuals suffer when hereditarily affected by hypertrophy or enlargement of the adenoids. It is characterized by a typical dull facial appearance, with mouth permanently open, upper teeth badly aligned and, behind the lower teeth, roof of the palate narrow and high, by partial loss of hearing, difficulty in breathing through the nose, and a tendency to tracheal and bronchial infections. Enlarged adenoids occur mostly in young children. As well as blocking the airways they prevent full inflation of the lungs and proper development of the chest. The most effective treatment is to remove the adenoids by surgery.
